What you'll need...

Citizen Card Software

In order to use the citizen card with online shops and public authorities, you will need a software program that supports the citizen card functionality. This software is also referred to as the citizen card software, or CCS for short.

The Federal Chancellery offers citizen card software free-of-charge (IT solution trustDesk basic). Other free software programs are BDC HotSign and the a-sign client (currently as a beta version).

Online CCS
The "Online-CCS " eliminates the need of local installations on the citizen's PC (minimum footprint). Using JAVA technologies the needed functionality is processed as JAVA applet in the user's Web browser. Actual JAVA installations are needed (from Java 6).

Service providers will increasingly support the Online-CCS. It can be tested at a demo-page.

For developers and the software-affine: The Online-CCS is available for free under the Austrian eGovernment Open Source Programme as the MOCCA-project http://egovlabs.gv.at/projects/mocca.

Important:

Please note that in order to successfully activate your card, the current version of the citizen card software must be installed and running (Windows trustDesk basic 2.7.6 or higher, Linux/OS X trustDesk basic 2.7.7 or higher).

PINs must not be activated before the e-card activation process has been completed. If the PINs are activated before the e-card is ready, the citizen card functionality on the e-card will no longer be able to be activated.
